Samsung had a good start in 2015, announcing in January ten new smartphones and continuing to do the same in the following months, but the most expected models were the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which were the headliners of the MWC event from Barcelona, Spain, which took place in April. Meanwhile, we started hearing rumors about a larger variant of the double-edged Galaxy S6 and thanks to some reports, we found out more information about this device.
The first reports with more consistent information regarding its specs started appearing at the end of June. SamMobile talked to some unnamed insider source and obtained details about the dimensions and the capacity of Galaxy S6 Edge’s battery. The phone, which apparently it was codenamed Project Zero 2, will carry the mobile number SM-G928, but it won’t feature the popular S-Pen stylus that is found on the Galaxy Note line of phablets. However, in SamMobile’s report, it was specified that the device will have a height of 151mm and a width of 73mm, but its thickness remains a mystery. As for the battery, while the S6 hosted a battery of 2550mAh and the Edge variant added 50mAh, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is expected to be powered by a battery of 3000mAh.
On July 14, SamMobile returned with a new report in which it was mentioned that the phone will be called Galaxy S6 EDGE+ and that its release date has been set for August 12, coinciding with the launch of the Galaxy Note 5, then it will available for purchase starting from August 21. Until now, there were rumors that Samsung will attend an exclusive event in New York and there will be released both phablets. Another news source from South Korea claims that the launch of both the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 EDGE+ will actually happen on August 13.
Specs
In the same report from SamMobile, it was specified that the EDGE+ will be powered by an octa core Exynos 7420 processor developed by Samsung and it will be packed with 3GB of RAM. Previously, it was rumored that Samsung will go for Qualcomm’s hexa core Snapdragon 808 processor and there are still voices (@onleaks) who are strongly convinced that the phone will feature the second processor.
The screen will measure either 5.5inches or 5.7inches (just like the Note 5), and it will be Super AMOLED with curved edges and supporting a QHD resolution of a 2560 x 1440 pixels, but there’s no word yet regarding the resulted pixel density. If the EDGE+ will have the same screen as the Note 5, then they will have similar dimensions. However, since the Galaxy S6 and S6 Plus took a big step in terms of design, coming with a back covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is available in four colors: white, gold, black and silver, the first thought that crossed our mind was that the Edge Plus variant will copy the design of the new flagships.
Continuing with the rumors, we must specify that the internal memory will have a capacity of 32GB and it won’t support expansion, because neither the Galaxy S6 / S6 Plus have this option because of the new design. Most likely, there will be three storage options, so you will choose the one that suits your needs. No changes will be done to the camera department, so you’ll have the same 16MP back camera with LED flash, Optical Image Stabilization, Auto HDR and f/1.9 aperture and 4K video capture, and you’ll take selfies with the 5MP front camera also equipped with Auto HDR and which supports dual video calls.
Since the phone will arrive before the new Android M, then it will come loaded with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box and it will be upgraded later.
Some leaked images of the EDGE+ showed the device next to the Note 4, and we could notice that the ports, the SIM tray and the speaker grille are found on the same locations as on the Galaxy S6, but the phone is as big as the Note 4. If the device from the images is the upcoming EDGE+, then it will come with the same screen size as the Note 5, but we noticed that it’s slimmer than the Note 4 (8.5mm).
And GSMArena obtained information from case maker ITSKINS according to which the phone measures 154.4×75.8×6.9, being 0.1inch slimmer than the original Galaxy S6 Edge. This flagship has a height of 142.1mm and a width of 70.1mm, it weights 132grams and has a 5.1inches Super AMOLED that can offer QHD resolution with 577 ppi. The front panel features an oval home button that hides the fingerprint sensor, which is PayPal certified, so you can use your fingerprint to make online payments. This feature will be added to the EDGE+ for sure.
