After releasing the first Moto X in 2013, Motorola revamped it for a 2014 edition and it seems that in 2015 we’ll have a continuation of this popular device which will receive a totally new camera with a 16MP sensor and optical image stabilization.
Motorola hasn’t confirmed the existence of this device yet, but leaked specs surfaced on the internet, and the rumors are spreading like a virus, making us boil inside wondering if the American company will reinvent itself and bring a new serious competitor to other famous flagships. We all know that the fall season is dedicated to the big launches, so there’s no need to remind you that in 2014 were released Apple’s new iPhones, Samsung’s Note 4 and Note 4 Edge and, of course, Motorola’s Moto X second generation.
September is a key-month and we’re looking forward to see if the Moto X 2015 will make its appearance, or if these are rumors, invented by a fake inside “source”. The specs of the Moto X 2015 were published on stjsgadgets-portal.com, after being handed over by someone who said that he works for Motorola.
Moto X 2015 – Technical specifications
According to this source, the “Moto X 3rd Gen” will run on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS, it will feature a 5.2inches AMOLED screen which will be capable of offering QHD resolution (2560×1440 pixels), it will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor like the one from the LG G4 and will house up to 4GB of RAM.
There will be two variants of internal memories with capacities of 32GB and 64GB, but, since last year’s Moto X model didn’t include a microSD card slot, it would be a big surprise to have the possibility to expand the storage. Regarding the battery, it will most likely be non-removable and have a capacity of 3,280 mAh. But here comes the more interesting part where we’ll talk about the camera, which, according to the inside source, will be capable of supporting 4K videos and will feature optical image stabilization. Previous rumors suggested that the third generation Moto X will have a 16MP main camera with “Clear Pixel Technology”, while the secondary camera would support a resolution of 5MP.
These specs were somehow backed by a new leak which surfaced on June 4. In addition, the new information points out to a new feature: a Type C USB port, which is a new USB standard and can be plugged in ether way round. Also, the new device will have loud stereo speakers which will be good for users who want to watch videos on YouTube and not struggle to hear what the person says in the video.
Design
Last year’s Moto X model allowed the users to customize its look by changing the color of the front and back panel and the trim, they also had the option to set a different wallpaper and greeting, or to have their names engraved on the back. It was a pretty interesting move, users could choose between wood, plastic, leather or resin cover, which was sold via the Moto Maker. It would be awesome if the 2015 device came with the same customization options, but for now, we have only a leaked image of the phone featuring a wooden back, which was published on PhoneArena, after getting it from TotalTech. There is another rumor hinting that Motorola will create a larger variant of the Moto X with a screen of 5.7inches, which will be available only in the US, via the Verizon carrier.
A possible release date
We don’t know if the phone is currently under development or if Motorola is still testing it before releasing it to the market. There are three months left until September, and if Motorola keep the release pattern, then we’ll have a big chance of gettting our hands on the successor. There is a report provided by the Indian import and export database site Zauba, according to which test handsets for the Moto X 2015 have arrived in the country, the phone being imported from Canada under the code name of “Motorola Calisto”. It’s curious that the name has nothing to do with the Moto X, but in the past, other famous phones showed up in similar databases for test handsets and much later, they proved to be the devices that have been leaked previously.
Moto X 2014
The almost one year old Moto X second generation can be purchased from Amazon and the price starts from 400 dollars. Its display is AMOLED, sized at 5.2inches, but it supports a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 424 ppi. It runs on Android v5.0 (Lollipop) and has 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset being powered by a Krait 400 processor with four cores clocked at 2.5GHz, the rear camera is 13MP and the one on the front is 2MP, while the battery is kind of small at 2300mAh, also being non-removable.
