Fix Error 3194 in iTunes While Restoring or updating iPhone/iPad: The most disturbing error while restoring, updating or even synchronizing the iPhone is the infamous iTunes error 3194. Whenever you are trying to update/upgrade/downgrade the firmware, iTunes keep throwing you this error. iTunes error 3194 is the most notorious error in iPhone/iPad and often falls you in trouble. The fact that I am saying it is the most disturbing or infamous error is not because it does not have a fix. But because it has a plenty of fixes which you have to try one by one individually.

For starters, Apple isn’t all interested in people downgrading their iOS firmware. So obviously, it won’t help you much, especially when you are trying to downgrade to iOS 6.1.3 or lesser after an upgrade to iOS 7. And when you are dealing with a jail-broken iPhone, it is going to be even worse.

If you are one of the real lucky guy, you would not face the error 3194 while trying to update or restore. Mostly, the users which do not tinker with their iPhones are the real lucky ones. But for the rest of them, error 3194 could be a pinch to your heart. So, here is a tutorial to fix the error 3194 in iTunes while restoring or updating your iPhone/iPad.

How to Fix error 3194 during iOS update on your iPhone, iPad or iPod:

As I said earlier in this article that error 3194 does not have a single fix, it has a plenty of fixes which you need to try one by one individually and see which one works for you. Below are all the fixes to error 3194 in your iOS device:

Fix iTunes error 3194 via Hosts file:

In most cases, the error 3194 may be due to some simple problem with the hosts file. Here is the procedure to fix it:

  • For Windows users, navigate to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/. Now, find the file named “Hosts”.
  • Right click on the file and open it via Notepad. Remember to open it with Administrator Privileges or else it won’t work.
  • Find the following line – 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
  • Now, either edit the line by typing a single ‘#’ (without quotes) in front of (before 74) or remove the line completely.
  • Save the hosts file and then try updating your iPhone via iTunes.

Now, if you are lucky then the iTunes would not through error 3194. But if you have iPhone Jailbroken too many times, then there would not be much help. And that’s when TinyUmbrella comes into the rescue.

Fix iTunes error 3194 via Hosts file for Mac Users:

  • For Mac users, the file in in/etc/.
  • Open the file with any text editing software.
  • Find the following line – 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
  • Now, either edit the line by typing a single ‘#’ (without quotes) in front of (before 74) or remove the line completely.
  • Save the hosts file and then try updating your iPhone via iTunes.

Now, if you are lucky then the iTunes would not through error 3194. But if you have iPhone Jailbroken too many times, then there would not be much help. And that’s when TinyUmbrella comes into the rescue.

TinyUmbrella is an awesome little software that you must have heard of already.

#Note: TinyUmbrella and this method is usually used to fix error 3194 for downgrading your iOS firmware. But sometimes, it can work for an update too. It is mainly because if you had a jailbroken iPhone that wasn’t restored to factory settings.

#Note: If you wish to downgrade  your iOS device, you’ll need to save SHSH blobs either to your local disk drive or on Cyndia. Right now, Cyndia has saved SHSH blobs up to iOS 7.0.4, you’ll need to save the SHSH blobs of your device (and then you can use TinyUmbrella for this).

Tutorial steps to fix iTunes error 3194 for a jailbroken iPhone using TinyUmbrella:
  • Download the iOS firmware (ipsw file) that you wish to upgrade/downgrade your iPhone to.

You can Download Firmware (IPSW) Files for iOS Devices from here.

  • Download TinyUmbrella software from here.
  • Connect your iPhone and close iTunes if it pops-up open automatically.
  • Open TinyUmbrella and then click on ‘Start TSS Server’
  • Put your iPhone in DFU ModeDFU stands for Device Firmware Update. DFU is all about upgrading your device. Click here to know how to put iOS device into DFU Mode.
  • Now, if you are updating your firmware, you will have to press on Shift+Restore(Win)/Option+Restore(Mac) and point it to the iOS ipsw file which you have downloaded in Step 1.
  • That’s it. You are done. Hopefully, iTunes would restore it to the correct iOS firmware you pointed to and updated your iPhone to it.
